Michael Byerly to U.H. Hon
This indenture witnessed that Michael Byerly of Harrison Co. IN. hath put and placed and by these presents doth put, place and bind out his daughter Nancy Ann Byerly, minor of the age of 5 yrs and 3 months as an apprentice to U.H. Hon to learn the art, trade and mystery of housewifery, which the said U.H. Hon now uses. The said Nancy Ann Byerly to dwell with and serve the said U.H. Hon after the manner of an apprentice from the date hereof until the 1st of Sept. 1868, at which time the said apprentice if she shall be living will be 18 yrs of age, during all which time the said apprentice shall well and faithfully serve the said master, keep his secrets and every where at all times readily obey his lawful commands, she shall do no damage to her said master, nor willfully suffer any to be done by others to her knowledge during the whole time, and the said U.H. Hon on his part doth hereby covenant and agree to teach and instruct the said apprentice or cause her to be taught to read, write and cipher to double rule of 3, inclusive, and during the whole time to furnish meats, drink, clothing, and lodging and other necessaries fit and convenient for such an apprentice, and at the time of the expiration of such time shall give unto said apprentice, 1 cow, and calf, 1 good bed and bedding, and 2 suits of clothing, such as is customary in the neighborhood and necessary cooking utensils such as is necessary for housekeeping.
In testimony whereof, the said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this 8th of Dec. 1855.

Personally appeared before me a justice of the peace in and for said county & state, came Michael Byerly & U.H. Hon and acknowledged the signing and sealing of the above obligation for the purposes therein named.
