Kentucky, Nicholas County, East Union Christian Church: about 1970

This church building was familiar to the Huffstutter, Hon, Sears,Kern and Wilson families who lived nearby. Built about 1819, the building replaced an earlier one built of logs that was associated with the Church of the Brethren where services were sometimes delivered in the German language.
About 1820 under the leadership of Adam Hostetler and Peter Hon (who had been expelled by the Brethren Church in 1816 for heresy) the congregation accepted a doctrine taught by Hon that included single immersion baptism, the observance of feet-washing because it celebrated Passover and the belief that a commemorative supper should not be held with the Eucharist.
